Karachi, December 12, 2016

  • Creation and expansion of technology-driven silica business

  • Highly complementary product portfolios and regional exposures

  • Contribution to strategic development of PCL’s portfolio

Karachi. Pak Chromical Limited (PCL) decides to invest in the silica business and bring amorphous silica and silane products to the local market. This will enable PCL to expand its position in Pakistan and Asia in this profitable and resilient business. "Purasil Silica will significantly strengthen our growth segment and be complementary to our commercial household business," said Maqsood Elahi, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of PCL. "In addition, it offers the opportunity to strategically develop PCL’s portfolio."

"The silica business has great potential locally and will pave the way for our company’s expansion into engineered materials," said Bilal Elahi, Director of the Executive Board. “We see it as a great strategic fit into our portfolio of products.”

The silica market is characterized by its variety of applications and shows above-average annual growth of 4 to 6 percent. PCL’s focus will be oriented toward applications in the consumer goods industry, the dental sector, rubber and tire and coatings industries and also be applied as flow additives and carriers for the manufacture of foodstuffs, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and silicones.

Silica are small particles based on silicon dioxide. Depending on the surface structure, they have a significant influence on the final product characteristics. Production is strongly technology-driven and thus ensures intensive and lasting customer relationships. The manufacturing process is independent from oil-based raw materials and therefore well-suited to PCL’s sustainable business strategy.

PCL is one of the largest family-owned businesses in Pakistan currently producing household detergents and associated products. It was founded in 1992 by Maqsood Elahi, who led the largest tannery in Pakistan during the 1960’s and 70’s. Today, the company has a broad product portfolio ranging from detergent fillers, foam boosters to organic Shampoo Base (SLES).
